Anambra: One dies, 10 injured as trailer fails brake, crashes with mini bus

At least one person reportedly died and about 10 people sustained various degrees of injuries at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, Anambra State Tuesday, when the driver of a 40-foot trailer failed brake and lost control of the trailer, thereby hitting a mini bus.

 It was gathered that the articulated vehicle that was not laden with any wares, was descending the Onitsha/Asaba expressway from Army Barracks axis when it suddenly had a brake failure and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

According to an eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, " Only one person, a man, died but about 10 persons sustained injuries. Some of the injured have been rushed to Toronto hospital.

"The trailer on failing brake, hit a mini bus and some travellers and hawkers. The man that was killed was at the scene when the trailer crushed him.

"The mini bus was hit beyond recognition and the occupants, driver and about two passengers, were not touched. The victims were mainly those on the road, " he further explained.

Meanwhile, street urchins and touts prevented people from taking photograph of the incident for reasons best known to them even as pick-pockets have a field day snatching handsets and other valuables from their owners.

As at the time of filing this report, no security personnel and road safety officials were seen .
