By James Peters, Onitsha
Unknown gunmen late in the evening of Tuesday, precisely 9pm, were said to have shot dead, a woman, in a bid to kidnap a car owner who came out to drive away after spending some time with a friend at Our Lady's bus-stop, along Old Onitsha/Awka/Enugu road, Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State.
This paper gathered that the gunmen, on seeing the man as he was about to drive away, blocked him and on the process of trying to escape with his car, hit an electric pole, dumped the vehicle and fled.
It was when the gunmen were shooting indiscriminately that a vigilante group that guards the area, responded fire for fire, that the gunmen, walked closer to the vigilante men to gun them down as they have more sophisticated guns, but could not get the vigilante men.
In anger they ridduled a car used as cover by the vigilante men with bullets even as they shot dead a woman who was by the other side of the road, believing she was a threat to them.
An eye witness who pleaded anonymity said that the yet to be identified gunmen drove in two exortic cars and three motorcycles when they did the operation
"They came with two costly cars and about three motorcycles, they were about seven in number but four were trying to kidnap the owner of a costly car too. They blocked him to kidnap him but he jumped the drainages with the car but was prevented from escaping by an electric pole.
"He then quickly came out of the car, abandoning it and fled while the gunmen were shooting at his direction and in the process shot dead a woman who was partially mentally deranged, that always stayed at the bus-stop.
"It was because the local vigilante group responded fire for fire that the gunmen then came for them and they ran away as the gunmen have more sophisticated guns. They ridduled a car the vigilante group used as cover, with bullets.
"The corpse of the woman has been removed by the Ogidi police command to a morque but the incident happened about 9pm on Tuesday," he further stated.
Contacted, the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mr. Sani Armed, (CSP), did not pick calls sent to him but a senior police officer, who pleaded anonymity said the DPO was busy attending to issues relating to the incident.
